Japan's Kyodo News Agency reported that Japan's Panasonic announced on February 20 that it will sell a high-precision face recognition software in August, which can be successfully identified even if wearing sunglasses or looking at the side face. Panasonic envisages to use it at airports, stations, commercial facilities, and stadiums and will expand its features this year to recognize masked faces. It will meet the increasing demand for security for the 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games.
The working mechanism of the new software is to compare the face captured by the surveillance camera with the face image data registered in the server and determine whether they are the same person. The software uses Artificial Intelligence (AI) self-learning technology known as "deep learning" to improve accuracy so that it can cope with parts of the face and sideways. The maximum range of tilt of face that can be recognized is 30 degrees up and down, and 45 degrees left and right.
